PaperCrafter's Corner - Magazine Inspiration: Week 25

Another Magazine Inspiration at PaperCrafter's Corner.  This week I wanted to do something different...I was really inspired by Darlene's entry for last week.  She made a tissue cover that was so adorable with a Disney theme...one of many that she sells.  When I saw this weeks Inspiration Magazine Cover, I knew I could make a 3D entry using it...not as great as Darlene's, but a step in the right direction for me! :)

Here is the Magazine Inspiration for this week:

I agree with Stephanie, I really like vintage suitcases, but I have no idea how I would use them!
So I made one that I could use:

I made one small enough to hold the Christmas cards that I have been making.

This is the first time I have made a project the way I made this one, I was inspired to try this method by Kathy Orta from Paper Phenomenon, if you have not seen Kathy's videos or all of the awesome projects she makes, you are missing out.  Make sure to head over to Kathy's youtube or website to view all of the yumminess of her unique  creations!!

These are the pieces that I cut out to begin with:

This is a correction to make...I cut out the top of my suitcase 1/2" tall, but it really should have been 3/4" tall:
Next, I cut out the hinges to put everything together:

The next step is add adhesive to the hinges:
Now it is time to construct the bottom and top boxes, using the hinges to connect the sides to the base and then to connect the sides to each other.

Next I used a product I learned about from Kathy...Tyvek.  It is a great product to use for binding and moveable joints.  I got mine from Office Depot, the white envelopes that are made from Tyvek.

From this point on, it was trial and error...since I could see the white through the lid, I cut some more kraft colored cardstock in 1" wide strips, scored at 1/2" and cut them at 6" and 4.5" lengths to cover all of the edges of the boxes.  Because I made the boxes the same measurements of 6" and 4.5" the smaller box just sat on top of the bottom box.  To make a connection between the boxes, I cut some chipboard 1.75" tall and 2 of them 6" long and 2 of them just a smidgen less than 4.5" and taped them to the inside of the bottom box.  This made a lip for the top box to sit around.  I used masking tape around the edges of the top box and colored it with tea colored distress ink.  I made my handle from wooden beads, elastic string, masking tape, and brown grosgrain ribbon.  The metal corner edges and the ringed brads are from Tim Holtz.  I used a key ring and more kraft cardstock to make the band down the center of the "suitcase" and the medallion on the tip of the band is a brad from CTMH and I used velcro as the closure for the band.  If you see something I did not cover, leave a comment and I will get back to you!  Thanks for stopping by!!
